In March 2020, following a dispute with the Nubian government over town funding, gorkymoo119 led a town referendum campaign that saw Mersa exit Nubia to join Yemen; this later resulted in the handover of Nubia to the Yemen Empire and the abdication of twomoo1119, at which point Mersa rejoined Nubia. Following disagreement by gorkymoo1119 and other Nubians with Yemeni rule, gorkymoo1119 established Ethiopia with Mersa as its capital in May 2020, before rejoining Nubia the same month, following reunification negotiations that reinstalled twomoo1119, and soon resulted in Nubian reindependence. It subsequently remained part of Nubia until gorkymoo1119's 42-daying on 4 December 2021; at which point, various successor towns were established.

			Throughout its existence, the town followed the Nubian mass recruitment policy established during the First Nubian Empire by twomoo1119, leading it to become one of the largest towns on the server until mid-2021. Due to the 100-resident cap at the time, Mersa saw the establishment of two proxy towns - West and South Mersa - that also followed its population policies. With such large, consistent recruitment efforts, the town has had a number of notable alumni, including 2 of the 3 Nubian prime ministers, multiple nation leaders and many mayors, as well as seeing other notable players join the town at various points. The town itself also had noted contributors beyond gorkymoo1119, including the mayors of its proxy towns (including 57billy, Nopnop100 and Erick2317) and councillors (including donthackkids, emi_wolf04, iamahamster and Thee_Boss).
