The Great Winter Surprise was a sudden aggressive conflict in Northern Europe between the nations of Lapland and Scandinavia. The war first began on 1 January 2025, when Queen CFRhino of Scandinavia declared war on Lapland, citing aggressive actions in relations to siege towns being created in Scandinavian-held territory. Lapland responded by calling on multiple allies, who joined the conflict in the opening hours in a surprise move, stunning commentators globally.
Prelude
Hints that a wide war would soon envelop Europe began in the third week of December 2024, when CFRhino announced that Scandinavia had achieved victory over Finnmark in a conflict that had ended with "their mayors no longer being online." This claim, posted in The Blockbuster Insider in a report on 19 December, was quickly condemned by other European nations. Fangering, the leader of the Netherlands, announced that diplomatic relations, which had been previously suspended with Scandinavia over previous incidents, would continue to be suspended, condemning the Scandinavian statement in a release to TBI later in the day of 19 December. Finnmark later responded that they were still active in the server; however, they called for peaceful negotiations, which were refused.
On 26 December, CFRhino proclaimed that Scandinavia was no longer a regency held by the player, but that they would take the role of monarch of Scandinavia. They announced their intention to expand Scandinavia, returning it to levels "not seen in a long time."
War is Declared
On 1 January at 02:15 UTC, CFRhino opened the war by declaring a state of hostilities with Lapland. In a statement, Scandinavia alleged that Lapland was setting up siege towns in Scandinavia-claimed territory, prompting the declaration. This move was condemned by Lapland, who promised that the move was just an excuse to claim more land in the peninsula. A full declaration was made public by Scandinavia shortly before 01:30 UTC the next morning.

Uzbekistan, which had previously been in an alliance with Scandinavia since 16 November 2024, ended its alliance and announced its neutrality in the conflict, but stated that aggression from either side would lead to its entering the war.
The Eastern Accord announced that, as Lapland was a member state, that it would suspend diplomatic relations with Scandinavia.
Svalbard announced that it would honor its alliance with Lapland and declared war on Scandinavia.
Lithuania declared war on Scandinavia, which startled some as Lithuania had no commitment to enter the war. However, a release claimed that Scandinavia had "threatened the peace of Europe," which prompted a Lithuanian entry into the war.
Finnmark, which had observed a ceasefire since 19 December, activated Article 5, Section 2 of the Blue Codes of the Organization of Free Nations, which meant that all nations of the OFN were now at war with Scandinavia.
