- The northern, hilly, in places low-lying, coastal tundra encompassing most of the nation's towns, including the capital, Salekhard.
- The Ural mountain range, an area including all Russia's highest mountains, characterized by its rocky landscape, snow-covered mountain tops and harsh living conditions encompassing only one Russian town, Uralgrad. This area, however, also creates a natural barrier by the nation's western border.
- The sparsely populated West Siberian Plain area, covered in deep coniferous forests, rolling hills, swamps and partly mountains, most of the few towns in this area are situated directly on the river Ob, as it is the only large source of water.
