Selvaの国名の元となったのは、アマゾンの平原を意味するポルトガル語の「Selva」から来ている。しかし、ポルトガル語は公用語と定めていない為、あまりこれらの表記は用いられない。

英語では「Selva Socialist Republic」の頭文字を取り「SSR」と表記される。

2023年03月21日19時ごろに当時のセルバ・コミューンとして成立。
2024年8月10日、ブラジル政府から正式な承認を受け、独立。
