The Message of the Day or MOTD is a small sentence shown on the server selection screen of Minecraft. EarthMC cycles through a range of MOTDs randomly, refreshing the server selection screen will show a new one.
Current MOTDs
MOTD | Meaning |
---|---|
A free lunch | Possibly a reference to the saying "there ain't no such thing as a free lunch". |
A Geopolitical Sandbox | This line has been used in promotional material for EarthMC such as videos and server browsing sites for many years. |
A number 9 large | A reference to this famous quote from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. |
Backed up hourly | Fix has very good data redundancy practises. |
Direct Connection | You would not be able to see this or any of the MOTDs if you were using the direct connection option in the server selection screen. |
Double click | Presumably telling the viewer to double click EarthMC in the server list to join. |
Earth hour (every hour) | Earth hour is an event where people are encouraged to turn off all non-essential electronics. Since EarthMC is running an Earth map it is always Earth hour. |
eff.org | A non-profit that promotes digital rights. |
Flat? | A joke about flat earthers, possibly is meant from the perspective of a flat earther having their interest piqued by learning that EarthMC is flat. |
Ft. David Attenborough | Possibly a reference to the famous documentary "Planet Earth" that is narrated by Sir David Attenborough. Attenborough's name was previously misspelled as "Attenborugh". |
Gold rush! | Gold is used as the currency on EarthMC, this MOTD is likely a reference to the real life phenomenon of a gold rush and how valuable gold is on EarthMC. |
Have you ever had a dream | Presumably a reference to this famous video. |
Hejsan | The Swedish equivalent of "Hello". |
If I say so myself, and I say so | "If I say so myself" is a common term to praise your own work, presumably it is being said here to praise the quality of EarthMC. |
ISO 8601 only | Fix has stated that he is "going to enforce iso8601 on emc" in the past. |
Now on 1.19.3! | EarthMC supports the latest version of Minecraft, 1.19.3. |
One small step for mankind | Presumably this is a "small step" for mankind as opposed to a "giant leap" in the original quote by Neil Armstrong as EarthMC only causes society to regress. |
Over 1000 years combined playtime | This is the total playtime of all EarthMC players on EarthMC. |
Pale blue dot | Pale Blue Dot is a famous photograph of Earth taken by Voyager 1 from over 6 billion kilometres away. |
play.artmc.net | A nod to Fix's other server artmc.net. |
Runs on Linux | EarthMC is hosted using the operating system Linux. |
Since 2016 | EarthMC was first created in 2016. |
Sponsored by destiny | Looks like a reference to the song Sponsored By Destiny by Swedish group Slagsmålsklubben. The word "sponsored" was previously misspelled as "sonsored". |
The original | Presumably a reference to EarthMC being the first of it's kind. |
To the tunes of Pink Floyd | Presumably Fix or another admin/dev is a fan of Pink Floyd. |
Touch a grass block | Minecraft version of the ancient proverb "touch grass". |
Vanilla smp | EarthMC is not a vanilla SMP, it is running many plugins that drastically alter gameplay. |

Windows XP startup sound | A reference to the famous sound. |
