The Serene Republic of Waddenzee (Waddenish: Zekrel Waddenzee Repoeblich) is a new micro-town, located on the tip of Noord-Holland (Den Helder), Texel, and the Waddell sea. Neighboring towns include Frisia, Amsterdam, Atlantis and Belgium.

History

After finally having enough gold, the first Serene Doge of Waddenzee, Pastelant, swam up to the small unclaimed chunks and founded the town and united all the unnamed clans living there.

Politics and Government

The town strives to be independent from the preying eyes of Britain, Austria and Spain. It has very little land and has a lot of development underground, and makes income through trading small goods and providing raw materials. The economy remains small. The Waddenzeelanders believe that they're the true frisians, and Frisia is just a bastard vassal of the Dutch tyrants, and say they are the true claimants of the land. They also see the Belgians as French people outside France that need to go back to bloody France. The town is a Most Serene Republic, ruled over by a duke or "Doge"- who is elected but rules for life as long as there isn't a vote of no confidence. The subdivisions are ruled over by similarly elected regional governors. The Kaiser of the German Empire is a political figurehead and technically the constitutional ruling noble, but the town is not part of the German Empire itself and the nation has no power over it. Waddenzee recognizes the Kaiser of Germany, rather than the one of Austria.

Culture

There is a unique Waddenzee culture, and there is a language- Waddenish, which is a sort of pidgin creole formed from Dutch, Frisian, English and German. Hochdeutsch is also an official language, but it is seldom used. There is a strong poetic and musical culture, and there is a regional anthem -unlike most other towns- "Fogiez twieten, tat suid ond sund!" (Tweeting birds, how sweet and Sound!) set to the tune of "Noord-Holland Volkslied".

The religion is the native pagan Waddenish mythology, centering a figure known as Shrek: the green one. The locals believe him to be the cause of all the land-reclamation and the architect for their proud hoemeland after his ascension from the swamp. There are festivals around Shrekism, and worship includes great banquets and dances that go on for all night. Often recited is the Shrekist Epic- a 3,000 line poetic saga in Frisian and Old Waddenish about his triumph over the lesser-gods and the foundation of the higher, middle, and lower realms.

The native cuisines include the Waddenbrad loaf, Hakodfisc 'n chips and Saarbrid- raw chicken consumed without milk, as a severe gamble between health and food-poisoning and this is seen as a rite of courage, or a nasty delicacy for the few tourists who dare to visit.

There is a large amount of gold situated in chests in unclaimed land around the town, for foreign aid and donation. For their location, watch this on the official Waddenzee YouTube channel!

Landmarks

  • The Waddenzee Grand Hall (Jeard ond Boarjatset-Beorsele Waddenzee) , also known as the Serene Doge's Palace. These are both misnomers, as it more like the great court or senate for the Doge and his council of governors and corporate/religious/cultural representatives to make decisions and vote. There is a speaker that makes sure everyone behaves correctly and shuts up at the right times. The left tower is over fifty blocks tall, which doesn't sound like much but it is in fact the tallest building in the lowlands region and can be seen from blocks around. It has a big stick at the top that makes it go up to sixty or seventy blocks, depending on the religious occasion or weather, but most outsiders say this does not count.
  • The Gates of Frisia- an old ice highway that surrounds the Wadden Sea that is now become a familiar skyline and has sentimental value.
  • Joehanz-Edelwoelff Kanal- A celebratory canal constructed to re-island-fy Texel and to create a shortcut for boats. It also acts as a border between the Lowland Enclave of Atlantis and Waddenzee. Though, it has the nasty reputation of being quite deep, and you can easily be pushed off the shallow ford part if you go afk. But, it is an iconic part of Waddenzee and is loved by the population.
  • Ceolin-Veg Broeg- A bridge built in place of a gap in the old path leading to the Gates of Frisia that has space for ships to pass through with the player unharmed. It is the first bridge to be built in Waddenzee.
