British Columbia, officially the Republic of British Columbia, is a small country and city-state located mostly in the Alaskan Panhandle. It is bordered to the south and east by the Republic of Cascadia. Its population is 37, mostly centered in the city of Fjord, its capital.

British Columbia was founded on July 17th, 2023, by the political leaders of the City of Fjord, Cascadia, who were not against Cascadian rule, but rather wished to pursue their own path for their future. The town had purchased the nation of nearby Russian Alaska from the Russian Empire. Its independence and sovereignty came into full effect following bilateral agreements with the Government of the Republic of Cascadia and the later ratification of the Treaty of Fjord. It is a member of the Two Seas Federation with the Republic of Vinland, and maintains close diplomatic ties with Cascadia.

British Columbia is a representative democracy operating as a constitutional republic, with separate executive and legislative branches of government. Unlike the Republic of Vinland, which was formed at a similar time by former Cascadians, its government structure is not based upon Cascadian democracy, and rather incorporates a consulate in which two consuls serve as joint heads of government for renewable two year terms. Legislative power is vested in the Senate of British Columbia, elected by proportional representation nationwide. British Columbia self-describes itself as a city state, and thus has a smaller government and is mostly limited to the surrounding areas of Fjord.

History

Early History

British Columbia was founded by the city of Fjord on July 17th, 2023, following its purchase of Russian Alaska and Juneau. The new nation quickly formed a federation with the nation of Laurentia, called "The Two Seas Federation." The goals of the federation were mutual defense, stronger economic ties, and an increased community between the two nations.

The temporary council of Dapigthatbig and ViolentVampire then drafted up a constitution that would govern their nation. The constitution was put to a vote to the general public on July 18, 2023, and it passed with 100% of the responders voting yes. The temporary council then decided that it was time to hold their first elections. These elections would take place on July 22, 2023, and would decide who would get the honor of being in the first legislature of British Columbia. The elections were a success, and the first legislature of British Columbia was formed.

The founding of British Columbia was a significant event in the history of the region. It marked the beginning of a new era of cooperation and prosperity for the people of the region. The federation with Laurentia provided British Columbia with a strong ally, and the new legislature was able to develop policies that would benefit the people of the nation.

Purchase of Fox

In the later half of July 2023, the government of British Columbia became interested in purchasing the nearby town of Fox. Fox was a small town bordering the western half of Fjord, and its acquisition would have given British Columbia a significant strategic advantage. After weighing out their options, Consul Dapigthatbig contacted Lumiowo, the mayor of Fox. After some brief negotiation, Lumiowo agreed to give the town of Fox to British Columbia for free, under the conditions that he would become a councilor in the town and that he would be trusted in it permanently. The agreement was made on July 31st 2023, and The British Columbia Consulate appointed Consul ViolentVampire as the new mayor of Fox. With the addition of Fox Town, British Columbia now controlled a massive city-state totaling over 600 chunks.

This acquisition was a significant event in the history of British Columbia. It gave the country a major strategic advantage and helped to solidify its position as a regional power. The acquisition of Fox Town was also significant because it showed the willingness of British Columbia to cooperate with other towns in the region. Government

The government consists of two branches a legislative branch made up of a Senate elected monthly and an Executive branch consisting of two Consuls elected every two months.
