Lerwick

Lerwick, officially the Settlement of Lerwick, is a small settlement on the Shetland Islands known for being the first town established there since the release of Nostra.

History

Lerwick was established on May 2nd, 2026 by 84841 following a brief journey to the archipelago.

Plans for its settlement were established several months in advance, though its establishment after the public release of Nostra was meant to be delayed until the government of Scotland became aware of increased player activity on the island, prompting them to send 84841 to the archipelago in order to secure Lerwick's position.

Settlement

Upon setting out from the Highlands, navigation to the archipelago was difficult due to cartographic issues, leading to 84841 overshooting the original landfall point and landing on the northernmost islands instead. This landing was met with immediate protest by local nomad Ryan77r, though his attitude quickly softened and both players briefly co-existed peacefully on the main island once 84841 reached it.

Upon Lerwick's official settlement and ascension to the Kingdom of Scotland, Ryan77r offered a sweet berry as a token of friendship and briefly considered joining Scotland. However, upon receiving funding from Norway he left the archipelago to establish Kristiansand instead, leaving Scotland as the sole undisputed sovereign over the islands for the time being.

Government

Lerwick is administrated by the Lerwick Council, which is comprised of high-ranking citizens of the town and is headed by the Council Head, who by default also serves as the Mayor of Lerwick. The Lerwick Council governs based on majority consensus during non-emergency situations, and its influence affects anything ranging from land usage to justice. During majority acknowledged emergency situations, such as warfare or high-scale crises, the Council Head takes control for ease of governance until its resolution.

At the national level, Lerwick is integrated into the Scottish clan system and is one of the primary towns of Clan Percy. The town is subject to the Constitution of the Kingdom of Scotland, and its members participate in the election of individuals to the Parliament of Scotland.

Geography

Lerwick exists on the Shetland Islands, a relatively remote archipelago in the North Sea which is northeast of the British Isles. Its environment consists almost entirely of gravel beaches and sparse tundra, resulting in the archipelago's general lack of plant life and complete non-existence of animal life. The waters surrounding the archipelago are populated with cod, kelp, sea grass, and nautiluses.

The archipelago is predominantly flat barring the presence of some small hills, and the grassy areas inland are broken up by patches of gravel and mossy cobblestone.

Culture

Because of the Shetland Islands' relatively sparse ecosystem, Lerwick's functionality revolves primarily around fishing and mining. Buildings are predominantly constructed out both stone brick and the archipelago's native oak and spruce. Due to the lack of animals, resources such as wool and leather are mostly acquired through fishing and the salvaging of reclaimed leather armor.

The town's national symbol is the sweet berry, one of the few native plants on the archipelago and a representation of Lerwick's peaceful co-existence with the pre-existing nomadic population.
