Longyearbyen is the capital city of Svalbard.

History

Early History

Longyearbyen was founded on October 9, 2019. It is one of the few towns located in the territory of the former Svalbard, and was the most devoted to restoring the nation. On November 2 of that year, the town was severely damaged due to raiding by Viking City, of White Russia. However, after a later expedition of Viking City's museum, it was learnt that they kept fakes in the frames and kept the artifacts for themselves. On the 6th November, ThundorLord and the other founding members of Longyearbyen had finally gotten enough gold to make a nation, Svalbard. Soon after, on the 7th, the official coronation took place, and Longyearbyen became the official capital city of Svalbard.

Viking City

The city quickly became enemies with Svalbard, due to the raiding incident stated above. Viking City looked to expand their foothold against the new town of Longyearbyen, so they built a base just outside of it. Since it was out of claims, and an enemy base, ThundorLord quickly greifed it and left a sign, the message is forgotten. This marked the end of the Viking City raids, and after this the city recovered and prospered

Growth

Not long after it's founding, the town began to expand, as the town expanded slowly, a few players joined, (most of the now 'Lords'). These players would help fund the nation. During the save up for the nation, Longyearbyen put expansion on hold, as all funds, and all resident's gold, would go towards Nationhood. After Nationhood was reached, Longyearbyen began expanding rapidly, in population, and territory size. The capital has reached a size of 145 chunks. At its peak, Longyearbyen was home to around 32 residents.

Decline

The mayor of Longyearbyen, ThundorLord, has occasionally left EarthMC for weeks on end. This has caused a dramatic decline in the population of Longyearbyen, reducing it to a mere 11 inhabitants in March, and a shockingly low 5 inhabitants by the end of April. At this time, it looked unlikely the city could recover. But with Bobberson07 as mayor, the town has had a rebound in population with him recruiting almost every other day.

Regrowth

With Bobberson_ recruiting, the town reached 13 people, and with many of them being actives. The towns shopping district was also revived, with 3 shops currently functioning in the region. The town also got a Pissist Church, in the far east. During this time the city also sistered with Mersa of Nubia, due to the friendship between Bobberson_ and Gorky1119. At this moment the town still grows, and gets an average 3 residents a week as Bobberson gets better at recruiting.

Population Stalemate

A few days after getting 7 residents in a week, the town stopped growing. Virtually no residents joined for the next 2 weeks. According to Bobberson, a few factors played a role here, those were:

1. Many non english speaki players joined the server, meaning Bobberson couldn't communicate with them
2. Bobberson was trying to focus on other internal problems and issues

However this was compensated for by the new town that recently joined the nation, Hammefest. This town contributed with 9 residents of its own, making sure Svalbard doesn't drop down in population. Currently, the town is lloking to bounce back, getting 2 residents 2 weeks after the start of the stalemate.

Population Boom

After getting 2 residenta in a day, Bobberson got his confidence back. Next Monday he got 2 more people, and two days later he got 5 more residents, going from 14 to 22 in one week.

Abdication of Bobberson_

Initial Consideration

On the 23rd of September 2020, Bobberson_ announced in the Svalbard discord that he was abdicating the throne of Svalbard. He said he had plans to move to Asgardia, as he had spent almost a year in Svalbard, and was tired of it and wanted to move on. In the discord, he made 2 announcements, with the first stating the following:

"I am leaving Svalbard, to go to Asgardia

I've been here for a year, and I've always loved the nation. But, i want a new adventure, I want to do what I originally joined the server for, a town in Norway

i learnt that, if you stay in one town ur not getting the full experience moving around is natural, and that if you have plans and dreams, always follow them

This was my best experience on any game/server, and I will miss everyone that is in this nation, I'll miss Longyearbyen, all the buildings and how ugly the shopping district was. I'll remember eveything, but I will be leaving Monday. Everything happens for the greater good

Long live Svalbard, we'll never fall!"

The second announcement was in regards to who would be in charge after he left, and it stated:

" I have decided who will be taking my spot, we will be having a group lead the nation Everyone titled "Prins (Esse)" will have the chancellor rank, but someone will have to take control of Longyearbyen. I have decided Prins Ballgud Fjorden (faukiz_d) will be handling Longyearbyen I will miss everyone and everything here I will be leaving monday'"

Change of Mind

After a few days, the King of Svalbard changed his mind, as Asgardia was refusing to sell, and said he'd remain the King of Svalbard for a bit longer.

Official Abdication

On October 10th 2020, Bobberson_ announced his official exit from Svalbard, due to the arguing, saying in DMs that he couldn't handle the stress of being the Svalbardian King, and that he couldn't handle a nation and his life. He stated his intentions on moving to Copenhagen and retiring there.

Under 2019s

Under the new king, the population declined, however the official megaproject of an official reform and shopping mall started. During his rule, Pyramiden also split. However they won the war.

New Leader

After inactivity from 2019s, many remaining residents pushed him to abdicate and give it to a longtime resident, faukiz_d. He agreed, and the abdication will occur soon.

Inactivity

The town, after being handed to faukiz_d, undertook no growth besides flattening of the shopping district. The nation lost many towns to inactivity, and Longyearbyen's population was skimmmed down to only 2. The town is very inactive, with its current two residents logging on every few weeks to make sure they weren't kicked.

Collapse

A month into afaukiz' inactivity, he forgot to log in and the town fell, and the beacons and valuables were quickly looted by raiders.

Trivia

Longyearbyen is where the majority of the population of Svalbard lives, and where most national trade takes place as it is /n spawn. Longyearbyen used to be the northernmost capital city. It is the center of boat yeeter, the main entrance to it is in the centre of the town.

Longyearbyen became sister cities with Mersa on August 24th 2020, after talks between both Mayors ended. Currently, tips have been given to one another's towns as part of this arrangement.
