The government consisted of the representatives, elected every month, that then elect two of themselves to become the prime minister and the speaker of the house for that month. The prime minister then selects half the number of the representatives, minus one, to be their cabinet ministers for that month. The prime minister finally decides what role the CM will fulfill; Economy, defense, interior, and others are popular picks. The Speaker of the House assembled the representatives throughout the month to discuss a topic and come to a consensus on how the government should proceed on that topic. Ultimately however, as stated under Article 1 Section VII of the Mackenzie Constitution, all decisions made by the democratically elected government could be vetoed at any time by either of the founders, and founders had special executive powers to hold their own legislative assemblies without the presence of the Speaker of the House. This undermined the democratic system and arguably led to the political turbulence that toppled Mackenzie.

Mackenzie seceded peacefully on good terms with [[Aurora:Cascadia|Cascadia]] on October 2nd, 2024. At this time, it was known as NWT. For the next couple of weeks, NWT acted peacefully, signing multiple non-aggression pacts with other nations. These included [[Aurora:Cascadia|Cascadia]], [[Aurora:Vermont|Vermont]], and Ontario. Relations were good, and NWT quickly gained new towns and citizens across northwestern Canada.

Tensions arose when [[Aurora:Cascadia|Cascadia]] created the town "Ythan_Adevir" on the road east of Castle John, the most populated city in NWT. The NWT government demanded the town be moved further south away from a road that NWT claimed was to be used for transport by NWT citizens, and as a place for their towns to be founded upon, essentially claiming the open land. The Cascadian settlers declined this offer, which caused NWT to declare war with [[Aurora:Cascadia|Cascadia]] to ensure the safety of their claims. Since the war began Cascadia founded multiple townships around NWT territorial claims including Error and Fort_Toto directly between Castle John and HayRiver. Due to this war, Prime Minister RuffWoof resigned, leaving Beaver_Lake to [[Aurora:Cascadia|Cascadia]], at which point the founders were forced to run the country until a worthy candidate was selected. Eventually, TheSnowic was elected as Prime Minister for the month of November. After this, NWT briefly joined the Californian PSA meganation before later leaving and joining the Arctic Pact alliance due to right-wing ideology being heavily promoted in the nation.

After user Limao_mao reported NWT as a duplicate of another smaller nation by the name of N.W.T, NWT was forced to be renamed and rebranded. They wanted their nation to be named Mackenzie for simplicity, however staff forced them to be named the Mackenzie Basin. Later, they renamed to simply Mackenzie.

While Mackenzie may have attempted to present itself as a democracy, its constitution allowed the founders (specifically the nation's owner xStoicx) ultimate executive power. The nation entered a political loop in its final months, electing anti-war, democratic Prime Ministers like RuffWoof and TheSnowic, both eventually resigning from their positions and withdrawing their towns from Mackenzie when threatened with expulsion for not following the founders orders. As the nation fell to infighting between the Western Provinces and the capital, xStoicx proclaimed himself the Supreme King of Mackenzie, seizing all power over the country. As the Western provinces fled the nation to join their western neighbour, The Kingdom of [[Aurora:Alaska|Alaska]], Cascadian troops pushed across the Beaver Lake border, overclaiming HayRiver in a brutal display of Mackenzie's lost power.

Perhaps obsessed with the north and the west, xStoicx sold HayRiver to The Kingdom of [[Aurora:Alaska|Alaska]], disbanded the nation of Mackenzie, and moved as far northwest as he could. He went on to lead the town of ChillVille on the northern shores of the Kingdom of [[Aurora:Alaska|Alaska]].
