Shanghai, officially the Shanghai Municipal Revolutionary Committee, abbreviated as Hu and also known as Shen, is a city located in eastern China in the Yangtze River Delta region. It is also a Special Administrative Region under the People's Republic of China (PRC), and is currently the PRC's largest city by both area and population.

Shanghai is situated on the eastern coast of China, with Pudong and Puxi on both sides of the Huangpu River forming the core of the city. It faces the East China Sea to the east and lies near Hangzhou Bay to the south. To the west, it borders the friendly city of Huzhou, while to the north it faces Chongming Island of the Republic of Ming and Suzhou across the Yangtze River. Benefiting from its coastal location and its strategic position near the mouth of the Yangtze River, Shanghai has gradually developed into one of the most important commercial, trade, industrial, transportation, and shipping centers in the China region.

Shanghai was originally established in the Pudong area on 18 April 2026. Following the early consolidation of the city, the Shanghai Municipal Revolutionary Committee was formally established on 22 April 2026 and became the highest local administrative authority of Shanghai. On 2 May 2026, Shanghai joined the People's Republic of China.

The city's development has been characterized primarily by commerce and large-scale construction projects. Shanghai has successively developed ports, roads, high-speed railways, underground commercial facilities, pharmaceutical facilities, and the Shanghai World Trade Mall. It has also continued to advance the “Greater Shanghai Plan”, centered on the development of Pudong, government buildings, and public infrastructure. Shanghai has also become one of the more commercially active cities in the China region due to its trade in equipment, potions, and construction services.

Politically, Shanghai is governed by the Shanghai Municipal Revolutionary Committee. Under the leadership of the Central People's Government of the People's Republic of China, Shanghai enjoys a relatively high degree of local autonomy.
