Foundation
Founded on May 4 by doytnr, Sortavala was placed in the dense Taiga of Karelia by a river that leads to Lake Ladoga, nearby the IRL location of the town of the same name.
Sortavala was the second town to be founded in Russian Karelia but the first surviving, being preceded by Kakisalmi which too sat on Lake Ladoga and were the people who first hosted Sortavala's founder.
Geography and Architecture
Sortavala sits in Ladoga Karelia, placed on a river coined the 'Sorty River'. The town sits at the thinnest point of Karelia and links the Capital of St. Petersburg to deeper stretches of the nation. The centre of Sortavala sits on an artificial island, which is surrounded by the Sorty River, Lake Ladoga, and the Vostokala canal which seperates the Urban from Rural cores of Sortavala. A large proportion of the town is paved and raised above sea-level 5 blocks, with the y-level of 67. The town hosts 4 bridges, 2 of which being significant crossings of the Sorty. Sortavala is geographically split into 3 regions, being Insular, West-bank and East-bank. With the West-Bank being where the town was founded and Insular, consisting of the former 2, now merged islands south of the West-Bank on Lake Ladoga are the most recent developments.
