The initial name of the city should have been Khmelnytskyi (''Ukrainian: Хмельницький''), a variant of Ploskyriv (''Ukrainian: Плоскирів'') (from across the plains) was also proposed by one nomad from the Mongolian steppes, but over time the brothers decided to give it the name Proskuriv. It is not known why such a name was chosen.
