| On September 21, 2024, Home Secretary [[Setrus]] created the "parties forum" discord channel in Cascadia, with the intention of using it to introduce political parties to Cascadia. At the start, these were intended to be treated very seriously. Soon theerafter though, two very serious and well-organized political parties were formed. The first was the [[National Bison Party]], headed by [[Akeboun]], SergioTheCrafter, and a number of other individuals from the Cascadian [[The Frontier|frontier region]]. The other was the second iteration of the Cascadian Communist Party, headed by xStoicx, a longtime Great North mayor. The NBP was the larger of these two organizations, and focused on issues of regional autonomy, regulating discord moderators, and anti-globalism. The CCP, meanwhile, mostly focused on roleplaying Leninism and pushing anti-democratic and stalinist propaganda. The two groups very quickly developed a rivalry entering the [[September 2024 General Election]], which became increasingly toxic.

| One of the notable Great North members of the NBP was xHydre, the mayor of Castle John. On October 1, in internal NBP channels, xHydre had attempted to flex the fact that he was majoring in political science in university. Akeboun and [[Paradox1080]] then preceded to make fun of this fact, stating that a polisci degree was effectively useless. At first this was mostly friendly banter, until xHydre took it incredibly personally and got argumentative. Soon after, he left the NBP and joined the CCP. At this point the toxicity between the two sides, and between Akeboun and xHydre, escalated considerably.

| === NWT Secession ===

| On October 2, 2024, xStoicx, xHydre, and a handful of other mayors, exclusively members of the Cascadian Communist Party, seceded peacefully from Cascadia to form the nation of NWT. Since neither xHydre nor xStoicx had paid their [[CascAID]] debts to the government upon secession, many advisors in the Cascadian cabinet suggested that the Cascadian National Guard be placed on alert. This wasn't a universal opinion though, with Setrus and [[President of Cascadia|President]] [[Dracnoian]] believing that there wasn't an immediate cause for concern or hostility. The pair would pay off their debts the next day, and would be joined by a small collection of other mayors looking for a new experience in the long-ignored Great North, including longtime Cascadian RuffWoof. xStoicx would draft the constitution of the new "communist" NWT, placing the powers of government in a legislature that would elect a Prime Minister to serve as head of government. However, xStoicx and xHydre would serve as "founders" of the nation, a title that granted them veto powers and enormous soft influence over the government, serving as co-heads of state. RuffWoof was elected as the nation's first Prime Minister, and on October 8, he signed a non-aggression pact with Cascadia. Though the secession was peaceful, and both nations upheld a veneer of cooperation, the secession was not without scorn, and relations between NWT and Cascadia were privately quite tenuous.

| === Settling of Ythan Adevir ===

| On October 28, 2024, the town of Ythan Adevir (in present-day [[Mackenzie County]]) was founded by Aduwastaken. It was located only about 300 blocks east of Castle John. She attempted to make contact with NWT to join them, however xHydre was offline at the time. She decided to join Cascadia instead. This was much to the anger of NWT, as her town was placed alongside Highway 94, which had been constructed by the [[Cascadia Department of Interior|Cascadian Department of Interior]] years earlier. The road was a critical connection between Castle John and Hay River, the nation's capital. A little over a day later, xHydre reached out to Adu asking them to join NWT. When they declined, xHydre threatened to claimblock the town.

| In the afternoon of October 30, Cascadian diplomats, led by Secretary of State [[Capitanfra]], reached out to NWT leadership requesting an explanation for the threats. xStoicx replied that "of course there’s going to be consequences for your governments actions..." and that NWT viewed the settlement of the town as an act of aggression. Despite NWT's claims, there had been no previous contact between Adu and the Cascadian government. xStoicx then revoked the NAP between the 2 nations, and gave Cascadia 24 hours to remove the town from their claimed territory, or else action would be taken. This ultimatum was notably not approved by the Prime Minister RuffWoof, who attempted to calm tensions between the sides. At the same time, Adu had placed signs at the border of her town stating that it was her land and she would remain "...until the second coming of Jesus Christ. In other words, fuck off." xHydre responded to this promise stating that "it [Ythan Adevir] will perish by my hands then. You're fucking with the wrong player." Cascadian officials maintained throughout the beginning of the crisis that the town was not within NWT territory, and repeatedly stated that they had never even received a claim map from NWT to begin with. NWT would never produce such a map.

| === Skirmishes in the Great North ===

| From the night of October 30 into the next morning, PvP skirmishes began to take place between Cascadian citizens and NWT forces. It began with xHydre and others hunting the land around Ythan Adevir, where they entered into combat with Adu. This was met with general outrage from the Cascadian populous, and put paramilitary forces from across Cascadia on alert. By the afternoon of October 31, active PvP skirmishes were happening across the Great North. At the same time, the Cascadian government was occupied responding to military threats in California and supporting their allies in Texas.

| In the afternoon of October 31, RuffWoof was removed as Prime Minister in a coup. xHydre and xStoicx had threatened impeachment against him for his refusal to support their calls to action, telling him that "defiance is treason". He fled the nation after his removal and was named an associate in the Cascadian Department of Defense, promoted to the rank of sergeant in the Cascadian National Guard shortly thereafter.

| At 6:00 PM PT, municipal officials in [[Aurora:Astoria|Astoria]] raided the NWT consulate in Astoria. At 6:24 PM PT, Home Secretary Setrus alerted the cabinet that NWT had begun to poach isolated Cascadian towns in the Great North. By 7:00 PM PT, there was widespread violence occurring between Cascadian paramilitaries and NWT forces.

| At 8:32 PM PT, xHydre announced that NWT had declared war on Cascadia. He cited the PvP skirmishes that had broken out over the previous 12 hours, as well as Cascadia's siding with Adu and the town of Ythan Adevir. He stated that Cascadia was "...not a nation of democracy, peace, or even tolerance. Rather, Cascadians are colonizers, blood-thirsty, and feel strong in numbers." He proclaimed that NWT would not stop until Cascadia was "eradicated".

| In the morning hours of November 1, NWT forces began to place siege towns near important Cascadian towns in the Great North. Notably, [[Vancouver]] was targeted. These towns forced the Cascadian government to bring in emergency funds to Vancouver's overclaim shield, preventing a disastrous overclaim of the city. PvP battles, now being organized by the Cascadian National Guard, continued to take places across the Great North with NWT forces. On November 3, a NWT siege town named Yatsburgh was placed on the outskirts of Astoria. Around 9:00 PM PT, Cascadian forces entered into the Battle of Yatsburgh, ultimately leaving the battle with a partial victory (having taken less losses in PvP).

| While sporadic fighting between the two armies continued for several weeks, the war quickly devolved into an attrition war while both sides waited for overclaim opportunities or boredom to strike down the other. Dracnoian took the approach that NWT was to be treated less like a near-peer-foe and more like a pest. Meanwhile, xHydre was leading NWT's efforts to poach Cascadian towns to little effect. During this lull in the fighting, Cascadian operations focused on covert actions that mostly remain classified to this day. What is known however is that one of them involved the NWT mayor of Pechorsk Colter, Haines, who was providing intel to the Cascadian [[Cascadia Office of Intelligence|Office of Intelligence]]. The information they provided was used to great effect by Cascadian leadership, who were able to predict NWT warplans and monitor their internal affairs. On November 12, Haines was outed as a spy and kicked from the nation, causing Cascadian forces to rush to their defense. This began the Battle of Pechorsk Crater, which saw Cascadian forces successfully defend the town from NWT attacks. This would be the last major battle of the Johnstone Strait Offensive.

| === NWT Relationship with the PSA === | |
| On November 1, after declaring war on Cascadia, the NWT began to cooperate with the [[Pacific States of America]], led by [[OIsar]]. The PSA (primarily it's lead nation, [[Aurora:California|California]]), had already been fighting Cascadia for some time. Cascadian officials began to suspect that the two were cooperating as soon as NWT siege towns in Vancouver began to pop up similar to how California siege towns had. Later that afternoon, California hunters began to try and convince RuffWoof to rejoin NWT. At 5:00 PM PT, NWT announced that they had joined the PSA as an observer, confirming suspicions that the two were cooperating. At the same time, it was announced that the nation of BC (British Columbia) had been kicked from the PSA due to tensions between them and NWT.

| 15 minutes later, NWT declared war on BC. The exact reasonings for this war are unclear, however it's believed that NWT had been the target of isolated hunting from BC citizens. There was a light level of confirmed PvP between the two sides on through November 1 to November 2. On November 2, the PSA announced that it had brokered a peace agreement between BC and NWT. The two sides would agree to a white peace, not engage with each other, and BC would rejoin the PSA as a protectorate of California. BC citizens, notably Snowic and [[PicoTheCat|Pico]], would assist the NWT war effort against Cascadia for the remainder of the conflict.

| The scope of cooperation between the PSA and NWT and not entirely clear to this day. It's known that they cooperated to some level in coordinating military operations, and they likely attempted to form a cohesive diplomatic policy, but very little communications between the two entities have ever been released to the public. On November 8, NWT left the PSA and joined the [[Arctic Pact]]. The exact reasoning for this is unknown, however it is known that there was some argument between xHydre and OIsar when they made the decision to leave. This argument would escalate on November 21, when OIsar began to snipe a small number of southernly NWT towns to make a point towards xHydre. Although hostile action was briefly taken between the two sides, it never escalated to the point of a full conflict.

| === NWT Internal Politics ===

| The NWT's internal politics during this time are best described as a young nation trying to find its footing through war. Support for the war was high amongst the general public, pushed by a lack of contact with Cascadians and a propaganda effort from xHydre and xStoicx. After the removal of RuffWoof from the premiership, a new politician was elected to the position, he held very little sway over the nation's actually foreign policy. Only 2 legislatures would ever be elected in NWT, with the second being elected shortly after the war began. The primary focus of those in the legislature was supporting the war effort, connecting towns through infrastructure, and attempting to organize community events. Very few of these goals would ever actually be accomplished, and activity in the nation dropped significantly over the course of November. Although the Legislature still held de jure authority over the government, at this point the majority of the nation's affairs were being operated by xHydre and xStoicx personally. This continued until the collapse of NWT's democracy in a second coup on November 30, 2024.

| === Cascadian Counterattack ===

| The second stage of the war was dominated by attempts of negotiation between NWT and Cascadia. A few minutes after NWT joined the Arctic Pact, the Pact's leader, [[8set]], reached out to Cascadian officials asking to mediate a treaty. The next day, NWT leadership informed the Arctic Pact that they were not interested in peace, and the Arctic Pact declared neutrality in the entire affair. On November 14, RuffWoof, whose town was positioned directly south of Hay River, overclaimed the fishing area in the western part of Hay River. This overclaim would be undone a few days later after moderators deemed it a claim arm. On November 16, NWT was warned under EMC Rule 2.1, since there was already a nation named "N.W.T". The nation was then renamed to Mackenzie, after the Mackenzie River (this is also where the name of the war, and present-day Cascadian county, get their name).

| Going into the second half of November, Cascadian leaders began to devise a plan to counterattack the NWT and force them to negotiate a surrender. The plan hinged mostly on waiting for Castle John and Hay River to go under their overclaim limits, allowing siege towns to take the offensive. On November 26, xStoicx, at the suggestion of Snowic, requested new negotiations with Cascadia. They presented a draft for the Treaty of Yatsburgh, which would have set a border between the two nations near the 52nd parallel (Z=-11039 line), allowed Ythan Adevir to remain in Cascadia (though not expand), and enforce peaceful relations between the two nations. They also demanded that several other Cascadian towns located north of the proposed border be kicked. Cascadian officials completely rejected the notion of kicking Cascadian towns, and while not completely opposed to a claim map, they did also want to discuss war reparations from NWT. xStoicx refused to negotiate further on the matter, and instead decided to personally attack Cascadians during the negotiations.

| In response, on November 27, at 8:10 PM PT, Cascadian forces led by Vice President [[FieryMatter]] commenced the Battle of Hay River, overclaiming nearly half the town in a matter of minutes, and mocking NWT leadership while they watched the attack unfold. The next day, Capitanfra offered a 7-day ceasefire, and submitted Cascadia's demands for NWT's surrender. NWT would be allowed to expand within a neutral zone, however there would be little-to-no exclusive claims of their sovereignty. The Cascadian position was that the land had always been Cascadian, and they had tolerated NWT expansion there, and would continue to tolerate their presence if the NWT tolerated theirs. Despite Snowic's attempts to negotiate, xStoicx continued to refuse any offer that did not include guaranteed NWT territory.

| On November 30, 2024, with activity in the nation dwindling, xStoicx announced that the legislature had been dissolved, and he has assumed the position of king. This would be the second and final coup in NWT's history, and was followed immediately by the announcement that NWT would be withdrawing from all wars. In the eyes of Cascadia, this meant surrender. Four days later, on December 3, 2024, Dracnoian declared victory in the conflict, stating that "our defense is complete". He also thanked those who had assisted in the war effort, including Aduwastaken and RuffWoof.

| == Aftermath ==

| The second coup would be the last major event of NWT as a nation. That same day, Snowic returned fully to BC, and on December 5, xHydre and other mayors began to leave for Alaska. Almost all of them would become inactive after the war. xStoicx would continue to rule as king until December 19, when he quit EMC and sold the nation to [[Fruitloopins]], who led Alaska. The next day, Fruitloopins deleted Mackenzie, ending the nation just 2 months after its founding. Since July 2025, a reincarnated NWT, with xStoicx again as its king, has ruled over a small area near Hay River. There has been neither diplomatic talks, nor military action, between the NWT and Cascadia since the war came to a close.

| The Mackenzie War served as a prelude to the coming [[cold war]] which Cascadia would become involved in with Alaska and the Arctic Pact during the months after the war. Cascadia had firmly entrenched itself in its interest in the Great North, and because of this the region's security would remain a political issue in the nation for many months to come. The town of Ythan Adevir, once the center of the conflict, would continue to thrive in Cascadia for some time, and upon the creation of the counties system it became the seat of the new Mackenzie County. Adu would 42-day and the town was deleted sometime in late 2025.{{Republic of Cascadia (Aurora)}}
