Sagres is a town in the Kingdom of Portugal, located on the Iberian Peninsula at the westernmost point of the Algarve. It was founded on May 11, 2026. The town previously existed in an earlier version of EarthMC, and it was recreated under the same name to preserve its legacy.

History

Foundation

Sagres was founded by vOkloi and vJuke, both Portuguese players. From the beginning, the town received support from Cides_ and underrr in terms of food and materials. In the days following its foundation, Sagres officially joined the Kingdom of Portugal.

The town developed slowly at first but began to grow steadily and independently. New members joined, including vRoquy, BearXVR, and v4stro. The community constructed several key buildings, such as the town hall, communal enchanting facilities, the vice-governor’s house, and residential areas. Architecturally, Sagres combined Portuguese-inspired white concrete facades with traditional wooden structures. Beaches were also developed, reflecting the Algarve’s real-world reputation for sun, coastline, and nightlife.

Andaria Tension

Al-Andalus, led by Taha_AbuObaida and part of Mauretania - an ally of Portugal — sent a settler to colonize chunks just north of Sagres. Surprised by this move, vOkloi visited Andaria to understand their intentions. The governor of Andaria explained that they were attracted to the long beachfront and the location.

vOkloi rejected this justification and stated, alongside other Portuguese and Mauretanian officials, that all unclaimed land in Portugal was still considered Portuguese territory. Sagres would not tolerate non-Portuguese settlers in the area, especially from an allied nation.

The War of Andaria–Sagres

vOkloi ordered Andaria to withdraw from Portuguese borders, but the request was refused. Attempts were made to involve underrr and Cides_, but both preferred a diplomatic resolution and declined military involvement.

Feeling betrayed, vOkloi instructed vRoquy to form and lead the first Sagres army, leveraging his PvP expertise. Sagres invested heavily in territorial expansion to keep pace with Andaria, but this placed significant strain on its finances, leaving the town underprepared for sustained warfare.

The Sagres army stockpiled TNT, diamond armors, weapons, and potions. After a final warning was ignored, war was declared. Large amounts of TNT were used, surrounding areas were damaged, and lava traps were placed to contain enemy movement.

Andaria called for support from Al-Andalus. Sagres was outnumbered, and opposing forces had superior netherite equipment. Despite heavy casualties and losses, Sagres forces continued fighting until a mutual decision was made to halt the conflict. While Sagres did not formally concede defeat, Mauretania declared victory.

Free City of Sagres

Following the war, tensions escalated between Sagres and the Portuguese leadership. Sagres accused Portugal of betrayal for not supporting their actions, while the Portuguese government criticized Sagres for escalating the conflict and damaging Portugal’s reputation.

A democratic vote was held, and the majority chose independence. Sagres left Portugal, rebranding itself as the Free City of Sagres and adopting its own flag, which remains in use today.

During this period, Sagres was blacklisted by both Portugal and Mauretania. Despite this, the town continued to grow, constructing a church, expanding residential areas, and building an auditorium for governance and planning.

Reports emerged of hostile presence from foreign players, allegedly attempting to intimidate Sagres citizens. For a brief period, Sagres joined Monaco to gain nation benefits but later left after diplomatic discussions with Portugal resumed.

Reapproximation to Portugal

After several weeks, tensions began to ease. underrr visited Sagres in a strategic effort to rebuild relations. While acknowledging Sagres’ patriotism, underrr emphasized that war had harmed Portugal and that diplomacy had been the preferred path.

Although vOkloi still felt betrayed, he was eventually persuaded by a broader strategic plan presented by underrr. Facing territorial fragmentation, Portugal sought reintegration. Without a public vote, Sagres rejoined Portugal after its leadership agreed to the plan. Initially, the population questioned the decision, but support grew once the strategy was explained.

Portugal Funds and the Secret Plan

Portugal provided Sagres with significant funding to support a coordinated territorial strategy. Sagres rapidly expanded its borders, eventually reaching Andaria. In response, Andaria requested financial support from Al-Andalus to keep pace.

Geographically constrained, Andaria struggled to expand south or north and turned eastward — mirroring Sagres’ strategy. A minor border dispute arose when Andaria claimed an irregular chunk. vOkloi addressed the issue diplomatically, citing server rules, and the claim was eventually reversed.

A key step in the plan involved the creation of new towns — Beja and Cuba — strategically placed to block further expansion by Andaria and Al-Andalus into Portuguese territory. As these towns developed rapidly, Andaria’s eastward expansion became impossible, effectively halting its growth.

Acquisition of Andaria and Peace

Andaria eventually conceded, and Portugal absorbed the territory, renaming it Odemira. A formal treaty with Mauretania established fixed borders, preventing further expansion into Portugal and Spain while allowing existing claims to remain.

Some Mauretanian towns in southern Spain and near Gibraltar were later absorbed by Spain. Meanwhile, Odemira experienced population decline as former residents relocated back to Al-Andalus.

Sagres removed defensive barriers between the towns and built a memorial at the former border. It also constructed the N1 national road connecting Sagres to Odemira, later extending it to Sines, Altura, and Beja — making it the longest road in Portugal.

Sagres established diplomatic relations with Al-Andalus, becoming the first southern Portuguese town to do so. Efforts were made to maintain stable regional relations, including proposals for infrastructure connections, though not all were accepted.

Bank of Sagres

The Bank of Sagres, the town’s first governmental financial institution, was founded in June 2026. Its purpose was to clearly separate public and private funds, which had previously been intermixed.

Initial capital was voluntarily provided by its founders — vJuke and vOkloi — with BearXVR joining later. The bank funds public projects, investments, and loans. Assets are diversified, with a significant portion held in gold ore, making precise public valuation difficult. The total reserves remain undisclosed for strategic reasons.
