Summary

On the southwestern coast of mainland Finland, next to each other lie the towns of Hanko and Tammisaari. The towns were formerly their own separate municipalities but on 3.5.2019 a municipal merging was conducted.

Tammisaari-Hanko may be considered as Greater Finland's gate to Estonia and especially the country's former capital city, Hiiumaa. A fight was fought in the sea between Hiiumaa and Tammisaari-Hanko on 30.4.2019. (Someone please better clarify what the fight was about).

Tammisaari

Tammisaari was the first settlement in the Raasepori area.

The main pier of Tammisaari-Hanko is located in Tammisaari. The town is built in a hill, so the buildings mostly have a great view to the sea even if they're not that close to the shoreline. Tammisaari is quite significant as a fishing town and as a place for the people of Greater Finland to spend summer holidays.

Hanko

Hanko was established not long after Tammisaari. Hanko sits right next to Tammisaari but a stone wall partly seprates the two towns.

A marine fortress is located on the coast of Hanko. The fortress doesn't have an official name but is often called Raaseporin linna (Raasepori castle). The fortress serves as a part of Finland's defense system.

Traffic and transportation

Tammisaari-Hanko has its own Metro station but the Metro tunnel isn't yet connected to the national Metro network of Greater Finland. A highway also runs from Tampere to Tammisaari. Tammisaari pier is quite important for naval traffic in the Gulf of Finland.

A coastal highway is being planned between the towns of Tammisaari and Espoo/Helsinki.

The municipal merging of Hanko and Tammisaari

Due to the towns' close proximity to each other, on 3.5.2019 the mayors of Hanko and Tammisaari decided to combine their municipalities and form a whole new municipality. The new municipality consists of the areas of both Hanko and Tammisaari and the area has now two main leaders. The mayor of the newly formed municipality is the former mayor of the former municipality of Tammisaari, hillosokeri2. The secondary mayor (councillor) is keke_s. The new municipality is named Tammisaari-Hanko. Tammisaari-Hanko has a small population as of 3.5.2019 and is seeking for more residents.
