The Kingdom of Carpathia, commonly regarded by its citizens and allies as the legitimate Kingdom of Romania, is a constitutional monarchy and player nation on Terra Nostra. Founded by Bluwu101 on 29 May 2026, Carpathia emerged from the earlier Romanian political movement known as the Romanian Union, a coalition of Romanian towns across the Carpathians and Danube region.

Although the official in-game name “Romania” was taken by the rival Kalosvar-led state on 28 May 2026, Carpathia maintains continuity with the Romanian Union and is widely recognized by its Balkan partners as the legitimate Romanian government.

As of 11 June 2026, Carpathia had 53 residents, 12 member towns, and approximately 476 claimed chunks. These figures exclude several inactive ghost towns and some Romanian-affiliated towns that remain unable to join due to nation chunk-limit restrictions.

Early Romanian Settlement

Romanian settlement on Terra Nostra began during the server’s pre-launch period. Several towns were founded across the Carpathian basin, along the Danube, and in regions corresponding to modern-day Romania.

The most important early settlement was Bucharest, founded by Bluwu101 on 18 April 2026. Other early Romanian towns included Galați, founded by danyyboss07, Tulcea, founded by myhnealut, and București, founded by Vlad12o. Vlad12o’s București was later renamed Iași, as the town had originally been created without knowledge that Bluwu101 had already founded Bucharest.

During the pre-launch period, these towns were only loosely connected. There was no single Romanian state, and most Romanian communities existed independently or within larger foreign nations for practical benefits.

Creation of the Romanian Union

Before the public launch of Terra Nostra, the Romanian towns were not yet formally united. This changed when the Bucharest Council created a Discord-based organization known as the Romanian Union.

A more formal name sometimes used for this early movement is the Union of the Tricolor, referring to the Romanian national flag and the shared identity of the towns involved.

The Romanian Union gathered several local mayors and helped coordinate diplomacy, political organization, and future state-building. At the time, the combined population of Romanian towns was around 25 residents, with Bucharest being the largest town, holding approximately 6 residents.

The public launch of Terra Nostra brought a large influx of new players across Europe. This caused major server lag but also led to rapid expansion. Romanian settlements across the Carpathians grew from around 25 residents to roughly 40 residents in less than one week, continuing to expand in the following days and reaching 53 residents by 11 June 2026.

Early Foreign Affiliation

During the early period, many Romanian towns temporarily joined larger foreign nations, most notably Italy, in order to benefit from teleportation and increased chunk limits. This was a common practice on Terra Nostra at the time, until towns could gather enough gold to form their own nations.

However, this temporary dependence created political complications. A group of Turkish players affiliated with the in-game nation of Italy settled Kalosvar near the real-life location of Târgu Mureș. These players presented themselves as Roman Empire roleplayers and later claimed Transylvania in the name of Italy.

According to Carpathian accounts, Kalosvar’s leaders, including GoDd1 and iliuyu, joined the early Romanian Union in order to spy on Romanian organization efforts for Italy. These accusations later became one of the main causes of conflict between the Romanian Union and the Kalosvar-led faction.

Election of the First Voievod

As Romanian towns continued organizing, a major question emerged: who would lead the future Romanian state, and where would its capital be?

At the time, Romanian towns existed across most historical regions, but none were yet united under an official Romanian nation due to the lack of gold required for nation creation. The Romanian Union therefore held an election for the title of national leader, reflecting one of the movement’s shared ideals: democracy.

The candidates were:

  • Bluwu101, mayor of Bucharest
  • Huskiscool, mayor of Timișoara
  • Vampyrhum, mayor of Brașov
  • Portalium, mayor of Transylvania/Sinaia
  • Vlad12o, mayor of București, later Iași

Bluwu101 won the vote and was elected the first Voievod of the Romanians on Terra Nostra. Following the election, an interim government was formed, with Vlad12o appointed as Prime Minister by Bluwu101.

Expansion of the Union

After the election, the Romanian Union continued to grow. Around this period, LandellCat joined the server and founded what became Sighișoara, which rapidly expanded to become one of the largest Romanian towns by both size and population. Sighișoara joined the Union shortly after its foundation.

Other towns and local leaders also entered into relations with the Union. Ruse, led by Blanch in Bulgaria, and Chișinău, led by GeneralSindaco and swfc, also agreed to join the Romanian Union, although later disputes arose regarding the status of Chișinău.

The Transylvanian Crisis

The first major internal-external crisis faced by the Romanian Union came from Kalosvar. According to the Union, GoDd1 and iliuyu eventually revealed their alignment by claiming all of Transylvania in the name of the Roman Empire, represented in practice by Italy.

Kalosvar demanded that Romanian towns in Transylvania, including Brașov, Sighișoara, Târgu Mureș, and Transylvania/Sinaia, be sold or transferred to them. They warned that refusal would lead to war and deaths.

The Romanian Union voted against abandoning its Transylvanian members. The decision was made to defend fellow Romanian towns rather than leave them under Kalosvar’s pressure. Around the same time, the first Prime Ministerial elections concluded. Vampyrhum, mayor of Brașov, won the election and formed the first elected Romanian government.

In protest against Italy’s support for Kalosvar’s claims, Romanian towns joined Sicily rather than remaining aligned with Italy. Italian leaders refused to mediate or negotiate against Kalosvar’s aggression and wilderness killings, further worsening relations.

Constitution of 6 May 2026

On 6 May 2026, the Romanian Constitution was signed and voted into effect.

The Constitution established the Romanian political project as a constitutional monarchy built around town autonomy, democracy, and the right of communities to self-determination. Unlike earlier rigid state models, the Romanian Constitution did not define fixed borders. Instead, it affirmed that Romania reserved the right to interact with Romanian communities and that all towns possessed the right to decide their own affiliation.

This constitutional principle later became important in disputes with both the Soviet Union and Turkish Romania.

Debate Over Nation Creation

The Romanian Union contained diverse political priorities. The majority of members wanted to prioritize local development and the growth of individual cities before creating an official nation. A smaller faction argued that the Union should focus immediately on trade and gold collection in order to create a nation before a rival group could claim the Romanian name.

This second concern proved accurate when Kalosvar created the in-game nation of Romania on 28 May 2026, shortly before the Romanian Union was prepared to do so itself.

Carpathians refer to this rival state as Turkish Romania or Fake Romania, arguing that it was founded by Kalosvar to damage Romanian resistance in Transylvania by nameblocking the legitimate Romanian movement.

Foundation of Carpathia

On 29 May 2026, one day after Kalosvar created the in-game nation of Romania, Bluwu101 founded the Kingdom of Carpathia with the support of the Romanian Union and its member mayors.

The name Carpathia was chosen because the name Romania was no longer available. Despite this, Carpathia claimed institutional, political, and cultural continuity with the Romanian Union. Because the Union had already developed infrastructure, diplomacy, and internal organization, Carpathia did not suffer major legitimacy or administrative issues after foundation.

Most neighboring Balkan states were aware of Kalosvar’s nameblocking and recognized Carpathia as the legitimate Romanian government.

Foreign Relations

After its foundation, Carpathia rapidly developed diplomatic relations with nearby and international partners. It signed accords and pacts with several states, including:

  • Yugoslavia
  • Sicily
  • Byzantium
  • Poland
  • Portugal
  • The Bulgarian Union

Carpathia also joined Avocadoapache’s United Nations, led by The Lorax, as a founding member. This United Nations is distinguished from the rival German-backed United Nations.

Carpathia maintained local relations with many of its neighbors, including towns and states in Bulgaria, Bessarabia, and the broader Balkans.

Relations with the Soviet Union

On 18 May 2026, N2O, leader of the Soviet Union, approached Romania regarding the creation of a defined border. The Soviet Union proposed the Prut River as a border, with neither side settling towns across it.

Bluwu101 agreed to the proposal after consulting Romanian ministers, as there were no Romanian towns in Bessarabia at the time. However, Bluwu stated that Chișinău, whose mayor and co-mayor had previously agreed to join the Romanian Union, would not be abandoned unless its own rulers wished to withdraw.

Following internal Soviet discussions, the rulers of Chișinău claimed they had never agreed to join Romania, despite Romanian evidence to the contrary. N2O stated that the Prut agreement would remain verbal until Romania became an official nation, after which it could be formally signed.

On 19 May 2026, Rumelia was founded by ThatOneKaiser near the real-life region of Ialomița. Rumelia later joined the Soviet Union. Carpathia did not initially act hostile toward Rumelia, despite viewing its settlement as inconsistent with the spirit of the Prut agreement, because the Constitution recognized the right of towns to self-determination and affiliation.

Rumelia and the Prut Dispute

By early June 2026, tensions between Carpathia and the Soviet Union increased. On 6 June, Rumelia attempted to involve Klaudine, Soviet Minister of Foreign Affairs, in order to defuse tensions and propose an alliance.

Carpathia refused, arguing that the Soviet Union had failed to respect the Prut border. The Soviet position was that Rumelia had chosen to join the Soviet Union and that the agreement had been made after Rumelia’s creation, making it void or inapplicable.

Carpathia rejected this interpretation, arguing that the agreement never mentioned Rumelia as an exception and that the agreed border remained the Prut.

On 10 June 2026, Carpathia assisted the settlement of Soroca in Bessarabia. Soroca joined Carpathia, marking Carpathia’s own violation of the verbal Prut agreement, justified by Carpathia on the grounds that the Soviets had already failed to respect it.

Conflict with Turkish Romania

On 9 June 2026, Turkish Romania attempted to negotiate with Carpathia. Their proposal claimed nearly all remaining Romanian lands except for existing Carpathian towns. Although this was less extreme in Transylvania than previous Kalosvar claims, it still denied Carpathian towns the right to expand and claimed the entirety of Oltenia, which had not previously been part of their demands.

Carpathia attempted to propose a compromise based on the Mureș River, with western areas going to Turkish Romania and eastern areas to Carpathia. Turkish Romania rejected the proposal, causing negotiations to fail.

Skirmishes and harassment continued after the breakdown of talks. On 10 June 2026, border tensions escalated as Turkish Romania continued expanding in Transylvania and harassing new players. In response, LandellCat founded Covasna to contest Turkish expansion.

The Order of the Dragon was then founded to defend Romanian towns against Turkish Romania and protect Carpathian interests in Transylvania.

Internal Challenges

Carpathia’s first major domestic challenge was population. Because the nation had a smaller population than Sicily, its chunk limit bonus was lower. This prevented some affiliated towns from safely joining Carpathia without risking overclaim.

It took roughly two weeks for Carpathia to reorganize itself sufficiently to allow more towns to join safely. Even after significant growth, some Romanian towns remain outside the official nation due to chunk-limit restrictions, while inactive ghost towns are generally excluded from official statistics.

Despite this, Carpathia retained legitimacy due to the pre-existing Romanian Union, its constitutional structure, its elected leadership, and its network of affiliated towns.

Political System

Carpathia is organized as a constitutional monarchy. The monarch bears the title Voievod of the Romanians, while executive government is carried out through the Prime Minister and ministers.

The political culture of Carpathia emphasizes:

  • Democracy
  • Constitutional monarchy
  • Town autonomy
  • Self-determination
  • Romanian unity
  • Local development
  • Diplomacy and trade
  • Defense of Romanian communities

Unlike more centralized states, Carpathia’s constitutional philosophy recognizes towns as semi-autonomous constituent communities with the right to determine their own affiliation.

Legacy and Identity

The Kingdom of Carpathia defines itself not merely by its in-game name, but by continuity with the Romanian Union and the Romanian towns that existed before formal nation creation. Its supporters argue that a nation is not defined by a map label, but by the people, towns, institutions, and shared identity behind it.

For this reason, Carpathia continues to claim the legacy of the Romanian national movement on Terra Nostra and presents itself as the true Kingdom of Romania.

Today, Bucharest remains the capital and largest city of Carpathia.
