Route

Highway 1 branches from the North–South Main line at Zealandia Junction located beneath the Pacific Ocean roughly a kilometre east of Christchurch, and then runs southbound for 832 metres before turning to the West. It continues thence for 2279 metres before reaching Horsely West Junction, where it joins the North–South Main line again. For the remaining 478 metres to NZ City North station, the North–South Main line and Highway 1 are colocated.

History

The ice road was built by iUpgrade and wediaklup. Construction began in late June and the line was opened on 16th of August 2026. The floor height of the tunnel is an impressive 5 blocks (6 counting the ice layer), and the majority of the road has illumination. While it was initially built as 2 blocks wide, the highway has been widened to 5 blocks on 1st of September, 2026.

Future

An auxiliary route to Christchurch has been planned but is yet to be built. Signage in form of map art is planned by New Zealand Ministry of Infrastructure and are in the making as of 4th of September, 2026.
