Savoie had previously been a client state of Venice; however, new leadership in Savoie at the start of the month had set the two nations on a separate path. Savoie began seeking territorial claims in a filled Europe, leading to clashes between Savoie and France over control of towns held in southern France. France ultimately declared war on Savoie, and threatened war on Venice due to the client state status.
