President of Cascadia
|
The Governor of Cascadia is the head of state and head of government of Cascadia. The governor directs the executive branch of the national government and is the commander-in-chief of the Cascadian National Guard.
Article IV of the Constitution establishes the executive branch of the national government and vests the executive power in the governor. The power includes the execution and enforcement of national law and the responsibility to appoint national executive, diplomatic, and judicial officers. Based on constitutional provisions empowering the governor to appoint and receive ambassadors and conclude treaties with foreign powers, and on subsequent laws enacted by the Legislature, the modern governorship has primary responsibility for conducting Cascadian foreign policy.
The governor also plays a leading role in legislation and domestic policymaking. As part of the system of checks and balances, Article III, Section 7 of the Constitution gives the governor the power to sign or veto legislation. Major policymaking is often significantly shaped by the outcome of gubernatorial elections, with governors taking an active role in promoting their policy priorities to members of the Legislature.
The governor is elected directly by the people by Instant Runoff Voting, starting in the September 2022 election. Under the previous electoral law, elections for Governor were held using first-past-the-post voting. Elections for governor are held simultaneously to legislative elections. In addition, if a Governor resigns or is removed from office in the middle of their term, the lieutenant governor becomes Governor.
SayerQT is the 1st and current governor of Cascadia, having assumed office on August 17, 2022, following the August general election.
