It has existed since the foundation of the Empire, but only became a directly elected legislative body in July 2023 proceeding the adoption of the Mexican Constitution. The Congress consists of 7 members, known as representatives, but can be expanded by the House pursuant to Article I of the constitution. Members are elected at-large by the nation via proportional representation every two months alongside elections for the President. There are no political parties in Mexico, with all Congress members being independent.
