The Battle of Chiang Mai was a surprise attack against the Siamese town of Chiang Mai, Northern Siam on 20 November 2019 by Vietnamese forces. The battle occurred after a series of Vietnamese border agreement violations in Siam despite the two nations being officially allied to each other when the battle occurred. This event was considered a catalyst for the beginning of the Siamese-Vietnamese War.

Despite being out numbered seven to one, Siamese forces killed 5 Vietnamese forces and lost 1. This is the main reason that Siam proclaimed victory in the battle.

Prelude

Historically, the nations of Siam and Vietnam have been allies, cooperating for the better of the Indochinese region. This was most apparent when the two nations thwarted a Cambodian uprising during the First Cambodian War. A border agreement was ratified between both nations when doct_fr took power in Vietnam. However, Vietnam placed a town within Siamese borders, which caused rise in hostilities between the two nations. The Vietnamese Government told Siam that this would be the only border violation and asked for forgiveness.

The whole situation changed when a mainly French-speaking town called CiteDesDieux was created deep in Siamese territory and aligned themselves to Vietnam. The Siamese Government told Vietnam if they were to invite this town, conflict will break out due to them violating the border agreement for the second time. Vietnam collaborated with this town, supporting their town and people. Siam began attacks on CiteDesDieux as they refused to join Siam which angered Vietnam as they saw it as an attack on their own.

Surprise attack

In the response to the attacks on CiteDesDieux, Vietnam launched an offensive on the Siamese town of Chiang Mai, where Fluxeeh was. Fighting occurred for a few minutes with a large loss of life for the Vietnamese forces, despite outnumbering the enemy. Fluxeeh eventually perished in lava whilst fighting, burning all his items so the Vietnamese could not take his equipment.

Aftermath

After the battle, Vietnam officially invited CiteDesDieux to join them, causing the Siamese to send an ultimatum demanding the removal of the town from their nation or they would declare war. Vietnam responded urging Siam to declare war and that they would not remove the town, thus, beginning the Siamese-Vietnamese War.
