The President of Cascadia is the head of state and head of government of Cascadia. The president directs the executive branch of the national government and is the commander-in-chief of the Cascadian National Guard.
Article IV of the Constitution establishes the executive branch of the national government and vests the executive power in the president. The power includes the execution and enforcement of national law and the responsibility to appoint national executive, diplomatic, and judicial officers. Based on constitutional provisions empowering the president to appoint and receive ambassadors and conclude treaties with foreign powers, and on subsequent laws enacted by the Legislature, the modern presidentship has primary responsibility for conducting Cascadian foreign policy.
The president also plays a leading role in legislation and domestic policymaking. As part of the system of checks and balances, Article III, Section 7 of the Constitution gives the president the power to sign or veto legislation. Major policymaking is often significantly shaped by the outcome of gubernatorial elections, with presidents taking an active role in promoting their policy priorities to members of the Legislature.
The president is elected directly by the people by Instant Runoff Voting, starting in the September 2022 election. Under the previous electoral law, elections for president were held using first-past-the-post voting. Elections for president are held simultaneously to legislative elections. In addition, if a president resigns or is removed from office in the middle of their term, the vice president becomes president. Until late September, the position was called the Governor.
Setrus is the 7th and current president of Cascadia, having assumed office on May 21, 2023, following the May general election.
