General elections were held on 16 April 2023 in Cascadia to elect the President of Cascadia and all fifteen seats in the House of Representatives for one-month terms, the Public Advocate for a two-month term, along with retention referendums for all judges of the Supreme Court. These are the ninth elections to be held in Cascadia.

Incumbent President Milgorn123 has announced his intention not to run for a third term in office, and since his announcement, five candidates announced their intention to run. This included perennial candidate and Social Services Secretary Akeboun, House Speaker AghastBlock, Representative Ir0n, former representative and February presidential candidate ninjaboi601, and Mayor of Hay River Ohgizmo. The election was extraordinarily competitive, having as many candidates running for President since the December 2022 election.

The House of Representatives elections were fierce as well. With the recent boom in population within the Great North, especially in cities such as Prince George, it fielded many candidates and reshaped the political makeup of the region.

Electoral system

President

The President of Cascadia was elected by Instant Runoff Voting due to more than two candidates being on the ballot. In this system, voters complete a closed ballot on google forms, numbering candidates 1, 2, 3, etc. in order of their preference. The voting period lasts for roughly twenty four hours, however this may be a tiny bit more. Voters may mark as many or as few preferences as they wish. Each ballot is initially credited to its first-preference candidate but may be transferred on later counts to the next available preference where the first preference candidate is elected or eliminated.

House of Representatives

Members of the House of Representatives were elected by single transferable vote (STV) from 4 constituencies with between three and five seats.

Electoral boundary changes

The Electoral Commission convened in early April 2023 under the provisions of Section 2, Article III of the Constitution and made recommendations on changes to constituency boundaries due to monthly changes in population, influence, and activity. The Commission report, released and ratified on 7 April 2023, recommend little changes to the map, with minor changes occurring in the boundaries between Pacific and neighboring constituencies of Central and Great North. Most changes to the map were done via changes in district magnitude, with Central losing most of its representation caused by the Tri-Cities Boom.

Campaign

Prior to the electoral campaign period, the candidates for the election were uncertain. President Milgorn123 had hinted at a potential third-term run, however eventually decided upon standing down for re-election. Sign-ups for the Presidential Election began on Saturday, April 8, 2023, and soon saw the candidacy declarations of AghastBlock, Ohgizmo, Ninjaboi301, Ir0n__, and Akeboun. Additionally, Representative and former Defense Secretary Paradox_1080 announced his candidacy, but soon withdrew from the race. Akeboun, a candidate who had previously ran in the February and March elections unsuccessfully against President Milgorn, was seen as the initial frontrunner in the race, alongside seasoned statesman and incumbent House Speaker AghastBlock. Ir0n, a Representative from the Great North who formed a town just nearly 2.5 months prior, was seen as a wild card candidate, however surprisingly received notable endorsements, such as Former President TylenolEC, and later, President Milgorn himself.

Presidential Debate

Under the organization of SayerQT and moderation of President Milgorn, a Presidential Debate was held at 4:00 PM Pacific Time on Wednesday, April 12, 2023, between Akeboun, AghastBlock, Ir0n, and Ohgizmo.
